Many countries along the Belt and Road have high moun

tains, deserts, oceans and a lack of accurate meteorological information. The number o

f meteorological disasters in the regions is more than double the global average, the administration said.

Wei Caiying, deputy general-director of the National Satellite Meteoro

logical Center, said that real-time disaster monitoring by meteorological satellites coul

d provide these countries with a scientific basis for disaster prevention and reduction.

“Weather-related disasters such as typhoons pose a threat to life and property. T

racking their path could help local authorities decide how to proceed with evacuations,” she said.

In addition to real-time monitoring, the China Meteorological Administration set up the Emergency Support Mechanism for int

ernational users of Fengyun satellites last April, which covers disaster prevention and mitigation.

The case was made public after the father of one of the infa

ants said in a social media post that at least three babies had died at Shunde Hospital. He

cited a suspected cross-infection in the hospital‘s neonatal intensive care unit in March and April.

According to the post, his child was born on April 6 and was infected between April 7 and 10.

On April 11, the infant was transferred to Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital in Guangzhou.

The child was found to be infected with an intestinal virus and died after treatment lasting more than a week.

Many newborns were transferred to other hospitals after becoming infected, he said.

The health commission said the case resulted from Shunde Hospita

l’s lax management, inadequate infection control regulations and enforcement, inade

quate infection monitoring in the infant ward and failure to report infections as required.

China has also recently announced a strengthened reg

gime of intellectual property rights protection. Again, this is what foreign negotiat

ors are seeking, but also is important for China’s own economy as it transitions to being a technology leader.

Trade agreements can affect the types of goods being traded and they can redirect trade toward one c

ountry, away from others. They cannot directly affect any country’s worldwide current account bal

ance. A country that saves less than it invests will have to borrow foreign funds to import foreign goods to make up that difference.

There are two ways to reduce the US trade deficit. A serious recession would reduce investme

nt, but nobody advocates that as a strategy. The only other path is to change the US financial and gov

ernment system to encourage increased savings. China has almost nothing to do with it.

US soy farmers call for cool-down of trade tensions

US soy farmers have urged Washington to work for a positive solution to the current tarif

f dispute with the world’s top oilseed buyer China, and avoid further escalation of trade tensions.

In a statement released late Tuesday, the American Soybean Association (ASA) described the t

hreat by US President Donald Trump’s administration to increase the tariff rate from 10 percent to 25 p

ercent on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods as the “worst case” for US soybean growers.

“This is a predicament for soy growers,” said Davie Stephens, ASA president and a soybean farmer from Kentucky.

“With depressed (soybean) prices and unsold stocks fo

recast to double before the 2019 harvest begins in September, we nee

d the China market reopened to US soybean exports within weeks, not months or longer,” he added.

Lan Fei, marketing center director for Guangzhou Wei

meizi Industrial Co in Guangdong province, said people in lower-tier cities have huge consumption power.

In 2016, the company’s oral care brand Saky reached customers in lower-tier cities for the first time. Mor

eover, the quality of oral care products in this market varies, so there is huge potential.

In addition to traditional sales channels such as supermarkets and stores, Saky was introduced to co

nsumers in lower-tier cities by livestreaming hosts on social media platforms. The hosts used en

tertaining methods to introduce oral care products and educate consumers about the correct way to use them.

“On Kuaishou, the host placed some sesame powder on a piece of c

orn, showing that Saky’s electric toothbrush could easily wash it away,” he said. “The host

also held a Saky electric toothbrush against a balloon (which did not burst) to demonstrate that its power could not damage teeth.”

In the past couple of years, Dong Biyong, a mille

lennial enjoyed buying many Palace Museum souvenirs, gifts and other creative produ

cts. “I tried quite a few from makeup kits, lipstick, blush, to various creative gadgets. They are good so

uvenirs in combining the Palace Museum culture and history with their functions,” Dong said.

According to He Jianmin, a professor specializing in cultural tourism research at the Shanghai University of Finance and Econo

mics, said both the Palace Museum and Shanghai Disneyland have high reputation among visitors. Since both bo

ast intellectual property rights over their creative products, counterfeits are virtually unknown.

Shanghai Disneyland, a $5.5 billion theme park, received more than 11 milli

on visitors in its first year of operation (2016-17), and is “close” to the break-even point.

Regulators seek source of illegal HPV vaccine

Drug regulators in Hainan province are investigating the suspected sources of HPV 9-valent vaccines that were illegally adm

If a crime is found to have been committed, the case will be handed to public

security departments, according to a statement jointly issued on Sunday by Hainan’s Health Co

It said the four departments will form a working group to supervise the investigations and legal enforcement.

The working group will contact people who received the vaccines at

Yinfeng hospital, listen to their opinions and take action to safeguard their rights.

The zone is located in a labor-intensive area in Cambodi

which means the project will provide a large number of jobs to lo

cal communities,” he said. “It is expected that up to 100,000 to 200,000 locals will be d

rawn to the new economic zone after its completion. They will rise out of poverty by working in this zone.”

The project will be beneficial to both China and Cambodia, Qian said.

“Many Chinese companies go overseas to expand their businesses. However, because of a la

ck of experience and related knowledge, most of them face huge obstacles abroad,” he said. “Our company has done overseas business for mo

re than 40 years and will provide a familiar business environment for other Chinese companies in the new economic zone.”

Some Chinese companies have decided to join the investment in the ne

w Cambodia project, Qian said, adding that in his opinion, a company should follow the nati

onal policy and direction such as Belt and Road Initiative while being profitable at the same time.

The national landmark has received thousands of visitors

from China and overseas since it opened in 1968. Leaders from more than 70 countries and over 600 delegations from 150 nations have visited it.

During the three days it reopened to the public before taking road traffic in December, the bridge had more than 200,000 visitors.

The 4,589-meter-long structure reopened after 27 months of repairs. As China’s first home-designed road and rail truss bridge, it has been p

raised and loved by many. A truss bridge is one whose load-bearing superstructure is composed of connected elements forming triangular units.

Liu Yong, 63, a retired teacher from Nanjing, said he was in elementary school when the bridge first op

ened. Without telling his parents and teachers, he and his classmates walked more than 10 kilometers to see it.

“It was the most magnificent structure I had ever seen. When our relatives visited Nanjing, we

took them to see the bridge instead of visiting other well-known places of interest,” Liu said.

Zhou Lei, who lives in a residential community near the bridge, said that when he was an elementary school student in Ya

ncheng, Jiangsu, his father promised him that he would take him to see the bridge if he had high scores in his final exam.
